Kiki Rockwell is an Auckland local, singer-songwriter and producer, who you may also recognise as the lady on the keys from Auckland-based indie band The Leers.⁠

@kikibabyrockwell has just released her first solo track, ‘Left For Dead’ which is a folk-pop fantasy with a haunting-but-magical ambience of moody guitar plucks, sparse percussion, and enchanting vocals.⁠

1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?⁠
I wanted to be a film director. I would always control the narrative when we played Playmobil or in the woods. I wonder how the other kids didn’t grow tired of me, but I made sure there was always a juicy plot twist at the end and some wild character arc. Then it was all about NASA for a long time, but some random boy in my class said “every astronaut must be willing to kill” and that put me off (idk what he meant by that to this day lmao), and then it was probably a centaur.⁠

2. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be?⁠
Financially stable. Haha kidding, I would probs be a costume designer or character artist for games. Drawing was my first discipline and so I’m glad I got to draw my own EP artwork! My mum keeps asking to see it but I’m still tryna find a way to explain myself..⁠

3. Who’s your favourite kiwi artist that we should be keeping an eye on? And why? ⁠
@dawnpoems writes some really important and beautiful poetry. Neil Macleod’s music is so moving too omg. Finnegan Tui makes me sob and dance with his music too.⁠
